On Monday I had the wonderful opportunity to get a question that made me think. Someone in my family has been reconnecting with God recently and in working towards her goal she has had wonderful questions. The question she presented on Monday this week was how can the God that destroys people in the Old Testament be the same merciful God of the New Testament. At first I didn’t know how to respond because I knew that like all of our questions, this question would need to be answered by the Holy Ghost for her to know the truth and be able to have clarity and peace. My dad reminded me that God always warns His people by sending His servants the prophets. This week in my gospel study I have been reading in the Book of Mosiah where a prophet named Abinadi had been sent to warn the people of the city he lived in. The people didn’t listen the first time, but the Lord was merciful and sent Abinadi back two years later. Every time that I’ve come across so far in the scriptures where there was a group of people that had been starting to drift away from morals and righteousness, God sent a prophet to warn the people or He spoke to them himself. We can think back to the people of Nineveh with Jonah, or back to the time of Jeremiah where many prophets were sent to teach the people. The Book of Mormon is filled with many example like Samuel the Lamanite or Ether preaching to Coriantumer’s people along with many prophets who came before Him. Sometimes we see how the Lord just wants even the smallest amount of people to be righteous to have even the slightest justification to save a city like He did with Abraham and Sodom and Gomorrah. The Lord is a merciful and just God. One of the ways he shows His mercy is by sending prophets. Even though we may not have a record of all the prophets the Lord has sent or all the moments He has spoken directly to His people to try and save them, we can be assured that He always warns His people because He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Thank goodness Alma humbled his heart to the Holy Ghost and believed in the words of Abinadi so that we could be blessed by his powerful testimony in our lives. I believe God lives and I have felt His love and we have a living prophet today who continues to warn and guide us to the fount of living waters who is our Savior Jesus Christ. Blessed be His name, amen.
